Words fail one, when one tries to describe Jammu Kashmir. It is the paradise on earth. Snowcapped Himalayas, mesmerising lakes, rivulets, green, beautiful gardens,  pristine streams and stunning landscapes define beauty! It is true, if you haven't seen this paradise on earth, you havent seen anything at all!

Srinagar is Jammu Kashmir's summer capital. Its home to the wondrous famed Dal Lake and the Nagin Lake. They enhance its picturesque setting while the changing play of the seasons and the salubrious climate ensures that the city is equally attractive to visitors around the year. The valley of Kashmir has many “margs” (mountain-downs) with lush meadows, magnificent forests, luscious fruits. The most prominent amongst the margs are the Gulmarg, Sindh valley.

Ladakh situated at the western edge of the Tibetian plateau is another high-altitude must-do destination. Its altitude ranges from 9000 to 25000 feet. And is traversed by other mountain chains, the Ladakh range and Zanaskar range. It is rightly called “the broken moonland” and “land of endless discovery”. Ladakh is rightly called the “land of high passes”.  Among the popular places of tourist interest include Leh,Drass valley, Suru valley,Zangskar,Zangla,Rangdum,Padum, Phukthal,Sani Monastery, Stongdey, Shayok Valley, Sankoo, Salt Valley. Popular treks are Manali to Ladakh, the Nubra valley, the Indus valley,Markha valley, Ladakh monastery trek, South Zangskar, Trans-Zangskar Expedition, Spiti to Ladakh, Spiti to Pitok to Hemis, Rupshu, the Great Salt lakes, Chadar Ice trek, Padum-Phuktal, Padam to Darcha, Panikhar to Heniskot, Padum to Manali , Lamayuru-Martselang, Lamayuru - Alchi, Kala Pattar trek, Pahal. 

Ladakh and the Kashmir valley offer plenty in terms of adventure tourism, bike-trails, treks. Eco tourism is very popular in this region, primarily because of the strains tourism can cause on local resources. Homestays, volunteering on local farms is encouraged. Efforts are taken by many organisations to reduce the carbon footprint while travelling here.

J&K is extremely popular for its handicrafts and artefacts. From the trickets to collector items, stores here are stocked with them. Kashmiri Carpets – popular for their designs and texture, Pashmina shawls, silk, beautifully embroidered clothes are the hallmark. Ivory jewel boxes, jewellary, precious gem stones, furniture are also things to watch out for, while shopping here. Ladakhi and Kashmiri folk traditions are ancient. Their clothing, ways of life, cuisine are refreshing to the urban dweller. Kashmiri cuisine is a delight, having persian, Hindu, Baltic, Afghan influences.

When it comes to nature at its beautiful best, Jammu and Kashmir top the charts. Its so soul wrenchingly scenic, that it inspires spiritual upliftment. One cannot not be  awestruck by mother earth after a trip into J&K. It is, after all, paradise.
